How many 12x12 foam tiles do I need? The simple sizing math

How many 12x12 foam tiles do I need? The simple sizing math

If you’re buying interlocking foam tiles, the biggest question is almost always the same:

How many do I need?

Here’s the good news: with 12" × 12" tiles, the math is simple, and you can size your space in a way that avoids awkward gaps and messy edges.

Quick answer

  • A 12" × 12" tile covers about 1 square foot.
  • Our pack includes 18 tiles, so it covers about 18 sq ft before trimming or odd layouts.
  • Count your room area in square feet, then decide if you want a tight rectangle or wall-to-wall coverage.

If you want the 18-tile pack this sizing guide is based on, start here: https://jpsports.ca/products/gym-mats-eva-foam-tiles

Step 1: Measure your space

You only need:

  • the length of the area (in feet)
  • the width of the area (in feet)

Multiply them:

Length × width = square feet

Example:
4 feet × 6 feet = 24 sq ft

Step 2: Convert square feet into tiles

Because each tile is about 1 sq ft, the number of tiles you need is roughly:

tiles needed ≈ area in sq ft

So:

  • 18 sq ft ≈ 18 tiles
  • 24 sq ft ≈ 24 tiles
  • 36 sq ft ≈ 36 tiles

Our product pack includes:

Step 3: Decide your layout style

There are two common ways people build tile floors:

Option A: A clean rectangle zone (recommended for most homes)

This is the simplest and usually looks the cleanest.

You build a rectangle:

  • 3' × 6'
  • 4' × 6'
  • 6' × 6'
and place it where you train or play.

Pros:

  • minimal trimming
  • fewer awkward edges
  • easy to expand later

Option B: Wall-to-wall coverage

This can look great, but if your room dimensions aren’t tile-friendly, you may need trimming.

Pros:

  • full-room finish
  • no exposed floor around the edges

Tradeoff:

  • you might need extra tiles for trimming and fit

The most common tile layouts

These are the setups we see most often for home gyms and play areas.

1) Small corner zone (great starter)

3' × 6' = 18 sq ft

  • needs about 18 tiles
  • about 1 pack

2) Comfortable workout zone

4' × 6' = 24 sq ft

  • needs about 24 tiles
  • about 2 packs (with leftovers)

3) Bigger mobility / play zone

6' × 6' = 36 sq ft

  • needs about 36 tiles
  • about 2 packs

4) Under equipment footprint

Measure the base of your treadmill, bike, or bench and add a margin for stepping on/off.

The buy a little extra rule

Even when the math is clean, people end up short because of:

  • trimming along walls
  • odd corners
  • wanting a cleaner rectangle than the room size allows

A practical approach:

  • if your setup is a clean rectangle (like 3' × 6'), you can buy exactly the tiles you need
  • if you’re doing wall-to-wall coverage or a tricky layout, consider getting extra so you can trim cleanly without running short

Layout tips that make the floor look clean

If you want the result to look tidy:

  • build from one corner and expand outward
  • keep seams tight
  • avoid thin “strips” at the edge of the room (they look messy and can shift)
  • if you have to trim, trim against the wall (keep the visible edge full tiles)
